(15 Jun 2021) After more than a year of isolation due to the coronavirus, dozens of New York-area Holocaust survivors have reunited..
"This program just brought me back memories because I don't remember too much because I was only two or three years old. But I lost my father, I lost two sisters," said Holocaust survivor Jean Kurz.
The group was honored with a luncheon followed by a concert performed by Orthodox Jewish singer, Yaakov Shwekey. Many clapped, danced and sang along in celebration.
"I've been doing during the corona mostly at home, I didn't get out," said Kurz. "I was by myself for Passover, which was very bad. Shiva was very bad. And then that eased up. And I did get the corona and I was very, very sick, I was in the hospital. And I thank God that I'm alive."
Many of the survivors hugged and spoke for the first time since the start of the pandemic.
"It meant a lot for me to see the people that survived the corona. There's some that are gone, which is so sad. People that I know that are gone," said Kurz. "Just to be together with the people and see that we can smile again after everything we went through the past year and a half means everything to me. Just lifted my spirits."
And tears streamed down the faces of many as they enjoyed the event held in their honor.
"To see that the people care and everybody, it was just amazing. Very touching. I didn't stop crying, but it's alright," said Holocaust survivor Charlotte Cukier.
