This video gives a taste of the mesmerising spiritual and musical culture of Gnaoua from Morocco.
Gnaoua is deeply rooted in the heritage of sub-Saharan African slaves and traders who arrived in Morocco centuries ago. This vibrant art form honors their descendants through therapeutic music that seamlessly blends African grooves and rituals with Sufi spirituality and chants and Moroccan folk. Characterized by the soulful sounds of the guembri—a three-stringed bass played by the Maalem (master)—and the rhythmic clattering of the metal krakebs, Gnaoua performances create hypnotic, trance-inducing experiences.
Gnaoua artfully weaves together storytelling, mythology, and spiritual themes, with dance playing an integral role in bringing the music to life and enhancing the spiritual experience. Gatherings and lilas (ritual nights) are dedicated to healing, connecting with ancestral spirits, and fostering community, making Gnaoua an essential cultural art form in Morocco.
The coastal city of Essaouira stands as the cultural epicenter of Gnaoua, hosting the UNESCO-recognized Gnaoua Festival, which celebrates and preserves this unique heritage.
This video features the introduction to the traditional Gnaoua song and dance titled "Fongoro."
