I bought the AUTEL MV480 videoscope in May-2021. Reason is because about 1 year ago, I bought a new 6.5 Kilowatt petrol generator for use as a home standby generator. Unfortunately, the generator has been leaking fuel profusely from the start & so is too dangerous to be used. A few months ago, I made a shipping pallet crate & paid for shipment of the 110 kilogram freight back to the interstate distributor for repairs. The product supplier checked the generator & said they could not anything faulty, & so they sent the generator back to me unchanged.
When I got the generator back & started the engine to test, it began to leak petrol again profusely nearly the carburettor area. I asked the distributor for service manual so I could remove components to get to see the carburettor, but this request was not fulfilled. The distributor recommended I replace the fuel clamps in case they were defective. I only managed to replace 3 out of 4 clamps with sturdier screw-on clamps instead of the factory spring-clamps - as I could not easily access the fourth clamp. In any case, the generator still leaked profusely even after the 3 clamps were replaced.
I did not want to go through additional cost & effort to send the generator back to the distributor. Hence, I researched for a cost-effective full high-definition (1920 x 1080P) handheld videoscope. And so I bought the AUTEL MV480.
With the videoscope, I could easily determine that all the 2 fuel hoses & their 4 clamps were correctly connected & not leaking. The leak was clearly visibly coming from the carburettor housing itself.
Hence, I removed the carburettor's lower half float cover & found that the plastic float was completely dislodged from the upper body hinge because the horizontal retaining pin had fallen out. This meant that the float valve was not pushing into the fuel inlet to shut it off - even when the engine was off.
I am guessing the product supplier did not carry out a technical root-cause assessment of the fault by opening up the carburettor to inspect.
I made a longer stainless steel float retaining pin out of a stainless steel rivet stem. This would keep the pin from keep shaken out of its position by engine vibrations.
The bottom line is this. Sometimes, you have to Do-It-Yourself (DIY) things yourself to achieve a solution, & you need good tools/ instruments to help you do that. The AUTEL MV480 absolutely helped me!
In this video, I include the MV480 recordings where I inspect:
- text from a page in a book;
- the air intake manifold on my diesel truck;
- inside a phono-valve preamp;
- carburettor area of my leaking petrol generator.
