The morning after your egg retrieval you will receive a phone call detailing your “FERT Report”, you will learn how many embryos were made in the lab.
Not every egg retrieved is mature and only mature eggs can be fertilized. Also, not every mature egg becomes a fertilized embryo. Statistically, 70-80% are expected to fertilize. The embryos develop in the incubator over the next 3-5 days. In spontaneous pregnancies, the developing embryo is dividing and living in the fallopian tube.
At day 5, an embryo at the blastocyst stage arrives in the uterus ‘in vivo.’ In IVF cycles, we prefer to transfer embryos to the uterus on day 5, mimicking nature. On day 5, we analyze the developed blastocysts for their appearance, their cell count, if they are fragmented or if they expanded. We choose the blastocysts that look the best based on these categories to transfer.
How many to transfer depends on factors such as age and how many IVF cycles a woman has done and the appearance of the embryos. Ultimately, we work together to determine the best option for your individual situation and ensure the best possible results with our resources and expertise.
