COMPOSER'S NOTES
Poet Garcilaso de la Vega (1503-1536) is a vivid example of a "renaissance" individual, skilled in music, arms, letters, and battles of love. With a literary output of only 38 sonnets, and a few songs and odes, his poetry (due to its remarkable quality) stands among the finest of Spanish "Golden Age." Garcilaso was born into an aristocratic family, mastered 5 languages, and was on the imperial guard of Charles I of Spain.
