Fun fact: Sperm whales have the biggest brain on Earth, measuring six times the size of a human's and that brain may help explain how the endangered species avoid being killed off entirely.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, whaling ships decimated the whale's population, but a new study led by a Canadian scientist concluded the whale made smart use of its biggest asset.

The whale's only main predator was the orca and staying safe meant forming defensive circles and smashing their tails, but it left them wide open to be slaughtered when whalers began hunting them. But as Ross Lord reports, the whales adjusted and swam upwind to escape.
