My Mother grew up during the Great Depression. I spent Christmas with her last remaining sister who is now 89 years old. My aunt was 9 years younger than my mom so she doesn't remember the Great Depression like my mom did. She had a ham for Christmas dinner and she gave me the ham bone to make soup with since she doesn't like to cook. I thought I would make some Split Pea Soup with it like my mom used to do. My grandmother made this recipe also. It's very cheap to make and very easy. You can make a big pot of soup for less than $3.00 and feed 4 - 6 people with it. It is said that if you eat this soup on New Year's Day, you will have wealth and prosperity all year since the green split peas are the color of money and the round carrots resemble gold coins. I send you best wishes for a healthy, happy, and prosperous New Year!
