When the game begins, you’ll be treated to a recreation of Raiders of the Lost Ark’s iconic opening. There’s more than a few fun homages and shot for shot remakes, and you can start by either following your three Peruvian guides, or just racing off on your own down the clear path through the jungle.
Once you start going down an incline, head to the right to a thick jungle underbrush, and interact with it to move it aside with the help of your guides. One of the porters comes face to face with a creepy carving, and flees.
Keep moving past the carving until you come to a stream, and head left to travel upstream.
The path will continue across the stream once you reach a clearing, but you can keep heading up the left side to find a fun secret: the remains of Forrestall’s campsite. There’s a book that’s been left behind in the camp that you can take: Warriors of the Clouds (it’s entirely optional).
Crossing the stream, look for a pathway heading upward, and follow it to find a tree with a trail of white flowers, and a dart embedded at its base you can inspect.
After the scene, keep heading along the trail, and press the jump button by a low ledge to vault up and continue up the slope. When you reach a fallen branch along the path, interact with it to raise it up so you can continue.
In the next scene straight from the movie, Satipo will hand you the final piece of the map, and your other guide, Barranca, will try and make his move. Press the indicated prompt to perform a whip crack, and the startled man will flee, leaving you with just one guide left.
Note that you can also press your Journal button (J on PC) to pull out the famous map and inspect it yourself. This will also briefly highlight where to go in case you need to get your bearings.
The Chachapoyan temple’s entrance is quite close now, as you need only climb the hill by the water where you’ll find a series of stone steps leading to a dark and foreboding cave.
Find the Golden Idol
With Satipo close behind, head into the cave and along the path to brush away a giant section of webbing (if you’re not a fan of spiders, you may want to brace yourself, as you’ll need to clear Satipo’s back).
Just up ahead, you’ll run into your first trap, which rival archaeologist Forrestall was unfortunately unaware of. There’s another trap just beyond, so be sure to crouch down and hug the left wall to avoid the light as you move forward.
In the next room, you’ll need to use your whip to swing across the gap. Look up at the fallen log and crack your whip (F on PC) to latch onto it, and then move off the ledge to swing to the other side.
Finally, you’ll be in the hall of the Golden Idol, and while Satipo thinks there’s nothing to fear, he’s a little mistaken.
After pressing a torch into a hexagonal tile on the floor, you’ll be met with a dart, and here is where things will differ from the movie just a bit. You won’t be able to recreate Indy’s nimble dance between the tiles, so instead you’ll need to trigger certain safety tiles that disarm the row ahead.
To find the right ones, look for a hexagonal tile with a circle in the middle, and press down on it with your torch. Wait for the row of tiles ahead to recede, and then slowly crouch up to find the next tile with the circle in the middle.
You’ll need to do this once more after heading up the stairs, so don’t get too excited when you draw close to the Golden Idol.
Once you reach the prize, you’ll be prompted to pull out a relevant item from your satchel (Tab on PC), and then interact with the idol. Recreate that iconic bit of adjusting the sand in the bag, and make the snatch and grab.
Quickly race back through the hall and through the hail of darts, and take a left to find that Satipo has already crossed back over the gap.
You’ll need to toss the idol to him, so press the indicated prompt to ready your aim and then throw it to him. When he leaves without tossing you the whip, you’ll need to run and jump across instead.
When the famous rolling ball appears, you’ll need to sprint as well as move forward to outrun the death trap. A series of voices from the movie will begin to clue you in as to what’s really going on, just before the scene ends with Indiana Jones waking up from a riveting dream back in Marshall College.
