The all-new Buick Envista fills a gap in the Buick family of SUVs by landing square into the popular compact Crossover segment. It is the first Buick to fully adapt the brand’s new design language, which is likely to spread to other models in the future. In addition to the advanced design, it is a premium offering in the class yet is completely price competitive with more mainstream models. If you are looking for an efficient vehicle that carries a driver plus four passengers plus their cargo with all the contemporary technology but with a design that doesn’t just look like another small wagon, the Buick Envista will deliver it all to you.
The Envista design was first previewed on the Wildcat EV concept that toured the auto shows last year. The design starts with the hood sloping down to bumper level creating a forward-leaning nose upon which is a new interpretation of the classic three-shield Buick logo. Below the nose is a wide, trapezoid grille flanked by almost hidden LED headlights set far to each side. The face is accented with long “checkmark-shaped LED Daytime Running Lights up top, and similar-shaped bright trim on each side of the grille below. Grille texture helps define each trim.
The long, sleek profile includes a fastback sloping roof that’s more evocative of sport sedans than crossovers. Soft, curved surfacing bookended by high-positioned similarly-shaped DRL and tail lights convey a sense of modern elegance. Vehicle length is realized by a 106.3-inch wheelbase and emphasized by a stretched bright trim piece running from the base of the A-pillar over the greenhouse.
That long wheelbase and clever design bring a sense of spaciousness to the interior. Organic shapes, pewter-finish trim, and a 19-inch Ultrawide Infotainment Display greet the driver and front passenger. The display includes both an 8-inch digital driver information display and a class-leading 11-inch center touchscreen with wireless smartphone integration. Below are an elegantly finished band of hard controls for instant access to the more used climate and audio functions and further down available wireless charging. Roller controls on the spokes of the flat-bottom steering wheel allow for quick and precise volume adjustment and navigation of driver info displays. Additional thoughtful details can be found throughout the interior, such as color contrast stitching on the seats and Avenir and ST logos embroidered on the head restraints of their respective trims.
Fold both sides of the 60/40-split folding 2nd-row seat backs for 42 cubic feet of storage or field down just one side to load a 7.5 feet long item diagonally. With seats up, the Envista provides 20.7 cubic feet of space, which can be accessed by an available Power Liftgate.
The Envista powertrain prioritizes intelligence over size with a turbocharged 1.2-liter engine producing 136 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. It is combined with
a 6-speed automatic transmission. The model has a current manufacturer-estimated rating of 30 combined mpg. ST and Avenir trims feature a four-wheel independent suspension that combines nimble and precise handling while QuietTuning and Active Noise Cancelation deliver the quiet and serene ride of a Buick.
The Envista offers three different trims: the well-equipped Preferred, the sport-focused Sport Touring, and the lush Avenir. The Envista starts at $23,495
