The PLZ-45 or Type 88 is a 155 mm self-propelled howitzer designed by Su Zhezi of 674 Factory, and developed by Norinco, 123 Factory (Heilongjiang Hua’an Industry Group Company), 127 Factory (Tsitsihar Heping Machine Shop), 674 Factory (Harbin First Machine Manufacture Limited Company) and Beijing Institute of Technology in the early 1990s for the export market. It is based on Norinco's Type 89 (PLL01) 155mm/45-calibre towed gun-howitzer.
The PLZ-45 self-propelled howitzer is used by the People's Liberation Army of China, People's National Army (Algeria), Kuwaiti Army, and Saudi Arabian Army.
The PLZ-45 A4 is compatible with all standard NATO ammunition. It fires HE, HE-FRAG, smoke, illumination, and cargo shells. The maximum range of fire with standard shells is 20 to 25 km. This howitzer can reach 39km with extended-range shells. Newly-developed Chinese rocket-assisted shells have a maximum range of nearly 50km.
This howitzer is also compatible with precision-guided munition, such as the GP1 laser-guided shells, based on the Russian Krasnopol technology. These have a maximum range of 20 to 25 km. It is also compatible with Chinese satellite-guided shells.
This howitzer exploits all benefits of digital battlefield technologies. All aiming processes are highly automated. It takes only 1 minute to open fire once the firing coordinates are received from the forwarding observer.
