The Princeton Legend
KAZ, FATSO, COCHISE, AND COWBOY JACK
Dick Kazmaier won the 1951 Heisman Trophy, the last Ivy League player to do so, at a time when Ivy League football was competitive with the best in the nation. He is generally considered one of the two best athletes to ever come out of Princeton along with Bill Bradley. Art Donovan was a Hall of Fame defensive lineman for the Baltimore Colts who is better know today as a television raconteur, who told funny stories to Johnny Carson and David Letterman. Michael Ansara was a memorable actor best known as Cochise on the 1950's Western, Broken Arrow. He played Kang, a foil to William Shatner on television Star Trek, and was also the voice of Mr. Freeze on the animated Batman. Cowboy Jack Clement, a country music performer/writer/producer, worked closely with Johnny Cash, among others.
Michael George Ansara (April 15, 1922 -- July 31, 2013) was a Syrian-born American stage, screen, and voice actor best known for his portrayal of Cochise in the American television series Broken Arrow, Kane in the 1979--1981 series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Commander Kang on three different Star Trek television series, Deputy U.S. Marshal Sam Buckhart on the NBC series, Law of the Plainsman, and providing the voice for Mr. Freeze in Batman: The Animated Series and several of its spin-offs.
During the 1950s, Ansara appeared in several episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. It was the popular television series Broken Arrow (1956), wherein he played the lead role of Cochise, that raised Ansara's profile and made him a household name. While making the series, the 20th Century-Fox publicity department arranged a date between Ansara and actress Barbara Eden. The two later married and Ansara guest starred on Eden's I Dream of Jeannie series as the Blue Djinn, who had imprisoned Jeannie in a bottle. He also played King Kamehameha in the Jeannie episode "The Battle of Waikīkī" and in the final season he played Major Biff Jellico in the episode "My Sister, the Home Wrecker." Michael Ansara and Barbara Eden divorced in 1974. The couple had one son together, actor Matthew Ansara, who died on June 25, 2001, of a heroin overdose.
Arthur James "The Bulldog" Donovan, Jr. (June 5, 1924 -- August 4, 2013) was an American football defensive tackle, better known as Art Donovan, who played for three National Football League teams, most notably the Baltimore Colts. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1968. He was easily recognized due to the crew cut he sported.
n each of his first three seasons, Donovan played for a team which went out of business. He started out with the first Baltimore Colts, who folded after his rookie season in 1950, followed by the New York Yanks in 1951, and their successor, the Dallas Texans, in 1952. After the Texans franchise was moved to Baltimore in 1953 and became the second Baltimore Colts, Donovan played with that team. He became one of the stars in an outstanding defense and was selected to five straight Pro Bowls, from 1953 through 1957. The Colts won back-to-back championships in 1958 and 1959. He was selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1968.[2]
During his career, Donovan played in what many believe was one of the most important games in NFL history, the 1958 title game between the Colts and the New York Giants.[3] The contest between the two teams took place on December 28, 1958 and ended in a 17-17 tie. Because it was the championship game, it went into overtime, the first NFL game to do so. Donovan made an important tackle during the overtime, stopping the Giants and allowing Johnny Unitas to lead the Colts on an 80 yard scoring drive to win the game.
