"My first literary curator was my grandmother who had lived all her life in a town with 300 people in the northwest of Ireland. She had all these bookcases full of these battered paperbacks," says Naoise Dolan, author of The Happy Couple. "She was a big fan of Austen, Dickens, the Brontes, and all these 19th century British. So by default, so was I. I became very obsessed with these Victorians. I later became quite critical of the underlying politics and what these books are doing ideologically, but I still have a strong belief that you can enjoy something as art while not remaining slavishly devoted to the ideas that are conveyed."
