Pico Viejo is the second highest summit on the island of Tenerife and last erupted in 1798. Recently, I decided to climb the flank of the volcano to an altitude of 9,000ft as I have never had a close-up view of the eruption site known as Las Narices del Teide. The hike started fairly gently but eventually became a bit of a slog as the path, besides being very steep, consisted of very deep, volcanic black sand so it was a case of one step forward and two back at times. The effort required in the thin air was well rewarded once at the top of the climb with some stunning views.
