It is with great sadness and profound respect that Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity recognizes the passing of Brother and Archivist Emeritus Robert “Bob” Barkhurst, Pi Beta '65.
Brother Barkhurst of West Dundee, Illinois, died on April 5, 2016, at the age of 71.
Brother Barkhurst’s relationship with the Fraternity began in 1965 when he initiated as a charter member of Pi Beta Chapter at the University of Dubuque. He was a chapter officer and a delegate to the 1966 National, 1967 Constitutional and 1968 National conventions.
He was elected as the first Region IX Director in 1968, and from 1972 to 1980, he served as Vice Chairman of Section 26, Nebraska; Section 21, Iowa; and Chairman of Section 27, Wisconsin. From 1981 to 2014, he held the position of National Archivist for the Fraternity for which he created a historical display for each National Convention.
During his time with APO, Brother Barkhurst was recognized with the Region IX Distinguished Service Key in 1981; Alumni Distinguished Service Key in 1982; National Distinguished Service Award in 1990; and was named the National Fall Pledge Class Namesake Honoree in 2000.
