Whiteflies. They are especially bad this year. Here's what I'm doing to deal with whiteflies this season.
Always try the least invasive method first - progressing to more invasive methods only if needed:
• Do nothing. Really - if the numbers are low, do nothing. Observe. Spend time in your garden each day. If the plant is stressed or nearing the end of the season it may be time to pull the plant.
• Remove infested leaves - if a few leaves are covered, remove and dispose of those leaves.
• Yellow sticky traps - If there is a severe infestation, hang up sticky traps and replace often if needed. Use with caution and only for a short period of time to get numbers under control.
• Insecticidal soap - If you are still seeing large numbers of whiteflies, spray both sides of the leaves of infected plants. Wait a few minutes and then spray off afterwards with water.
• Repeat as needed - You should see numbers decrease significantly after following these steps. If numbers are still large, repeat the steps again.
