STORYLINE
Bolivian authorities announced on Thursday a state of health emergency in the department of Santa Cruz due to a serious outbreak of dengue fever, with more than five-thousand cases officially confirmed.
Last week the Bolivian Health Ministry declared a health alert after the first outbreaks were detected and mobilised 18-thousand soldiers for fumigation tasks in the affected areas.
Juan Carlos Arraya, Chief of Epidemiology of the Health Ministry, on Wednesday said that although the official number of cases stood at 5,071 unofficial reports estimates the actual figure could exceed six-thousand cases.
Arraya said that according to the latest official reports, the number of deaths resulting from hemorrhagic dengue - the most lethal version of the epidemic - stood at four people.
The eastern tropical lands of Bolivia, specially in the department of Santa Cruz, are the most affected by the dengue fever outbreak due to the early arrival of the rainy season this year, health officials said.
Eighty percent of the cases have been reported in the Santa Cruz department, where hospitals are over crowded with sick people.
According to doctors, more than 100 people a day arrive to the hospital fearing they have been infected with the disease.
Dengue is caused by bites from the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which deposits its larvas in stagnant waters.
If the dengue fever is not treated in time it can develop into a hemorrhagic dengue and cause death.
