Packed volume test is a type of blood test. Our blood is made up of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Cells and platelets are found in a fluid called plasma present in the blood. Red blood cells are known as erythrocytes, they are very important in the body. Red blood cells contain a red substance called hemoglobin, this substance carries oxygen to all parts of the body. PCV test is done to know the amount of red blood cells in the blood. In other words, PCV test detects the number of red blood cells. This test is also known as hematocrit test.
PCV test can also be done as a routine health checkup. However, if any disorder related to red blood cells like anemia or polycythemia vera is seen in the patient's body, then this test can be done immediately.
The following symptoms can be seen in people suffering from anemia:
Shortness of breath
Constant fatigue and weakness
Severe headache
Dizziness
Hands and feet feel cold
Pale skin
Chest pain
The following symptoms will be seen in case of polycythemia vera:
Blurred vision or double vision
Shortness of breath
Itchy skin
Red skin
Constant feeling of fatigue
Excessive sweating
