The project commemorated the families and communities impacted by the issue of MMIWG2S+ within Saskatchewan by creating the WE RISE Film with families and hosting a two-day provincial gathering and one day Traditional Powwow in Prince Albert, SK.
The film WE RISE and the two-day MMIWG2S+ Gathering increased awareness in Saskatchewan by hosting the events in two major cities within Saskatchewan. The We RISE film will serve to communicate and educate the public on the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and girls in Saskatchewan.
The goal of the documentary flows from the WE RISE conference initiated by the Women’s Secretariat of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations.
The documentary looks at life after the MMIWG2S+ final inquiry, what the process was like for the families, and the teachings they have for those who are also going through this. The goal of this project is to look forward and show the resiliency and strength of our nations.
The project was filmed and edited in 2021 by Marcel Petit. It was completely re-edited and new cinematic trailers were produced by Turko and Associates. The film was funded by WAGE (Women and Gender Equity of Canada).
Special thank you to all the families who had taken part in the documentary. We honour your loved ones and they are never forgotten.
