2. SOUNDBITE: (English) General Pervez Musharraf, Pakistani President: "First of all certainly I hope the one thing that we ought to achieve quite unambiguously is that the core issue is Kashmir and we ought to set a definite direction for its solution and maybe a time frame towards achieving it. That's what one would certainly like to achieve."

4. SOUNDBITE: (English) General Pervez Musharraf, Pakistani President: "Well I keep saying I'm going with cautious optimism. The optimism part is certainly the fact that knowing my point of view I have been invited. So therefore one could presume that prime minister Vajpayee is serious and sincere about addressing the core issue of Kashmir and moving towards its resolution. And then he did give a statement quite recently, that he would like to address this issue and move away from the beaten track. But however my caution is because of other statements which have come up in the recent past, talking of Kashmir being a part of India and talking of the Kashmir issue, involving only the Pakistan occupied Kashmir and of course the fifty years history where we have being trying to resolve it but we always sidetrack this main issue and prefer to dwell in the irritant parts of the disputes, the minor parts of the disputes and not addressing the Kashmir issue squarely. So again I would say I go with cautious optimism. There is optimism surely, but at the same time I am very cautious."

6. SOUNDBITE: (English) General Pervez Musharraf, Pakistani President: "On both sides after these 53 years of conflict, blood has been spilt and we have fought a number of wars maybe there is a realisation on the public of both sides that we need to move forward towards resolution of the core issue and improve relations between these two countries, because really it is the relations between Pakistan and India which effect not only the one fifth of humanity living in these two countries, but also the entire South Asian region."

I would like to say they must see the reality, the reality on the ground of the the tension between the two countries I would like to sincerely ask them or urge them to resolve our disputes for the benefit of the people of India and Pakistan, poverty stricken people of India and Pakistan, for the economic progression of this region we must remove tension between us and we can only remove tension between us by resolving the Kashmir dispute."
