In today's video! I'll be diving into the misunderstood world of the Spanish M43 Mauser. Despite the misconceptions, I believe it's one of the best Mauser variants for the price, rivaled only by the Yugo variant. If you're eyeing a Kar98 but dont want to drop $2000, the M43 might just be your answer for a budget millitary surplus rifle!
Join me as I take my Spanish M43 Mauser out for its very first shooting session. The Spanish M43 Mauser is essentially a clone of the Standardmodell rifle (also known as Mauser Model 1924 or Mauser Model 1933), firing the 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge.
Interestingly, the Mauser Model 1924 was nicknamed the Gewehr für Deutsches Reichspost (rifle of the German Post Office) to justify production despite violating the Treaty of Versailles. These "post office rifles" were purchased directly from the nazis in the years leading up to ww2! It's a direct descendant of the Gewehr 98 or Mauser Model 1898. Spain acquired these German rifles in the 1930s, which they based their design off of.
Adopted in 1943 and chambered in 8mm mauser, the M43 replaced the M1893 and M1916 Mauser rifles, standardizing the cartridge in Spain. The main distinction between my Spanish M43 and the German Kar98 is the straight bolt, whereas the Kar98 features a bent bolt.
Production of these rifles continued until 1957, coinciding with Spain's adoption of the CETME rifle. Subsequently, many were converted to the Fr8 variant. This is when the standard in Spain changed from 8mm Mauser to 7.62x51mm Nato!
