Today I would like to tell you a personal story. By the end of 2006 I lost my job due to restructuring at Magna Powertrain. I had only worked three years for this employer but there were many other people who had lost their job despite being loyal to this company for more than 25 years.
Reality is that good people lose their job all the time but depending on how you handle it, it can be a blessing.
When the VP of HR told that I would be out of a job something happened within me. I experienced such a strong feeling of disappointment and decided right then and there that nobody would ever make such a significant decision over my life ever again. My entrepreneurial journey started that day.
I was really scared but the excitement of being in charge of my own destiny was so much stronger.
Today, after 14 years, I am grateful to be a corporate trainer and executive coach. In my work, I see so many people, at all levels, being fearful about losing a job that they don’t even like.
Here is what I have done to escape my fears over the years:
1. Breathe Deeply and Face your Fears: Today I recognize when I am scared and tell myself a different story. Based on past experiences I know that it never gets as bad as the picture my mind tries to create. One of my favourite sayings is that you cannot buy courage. You have to practice being courageous on a daily basis because the magic happens outside of your comfort zone.
2. Self-Improvement: Either you become better or bitter. I chose the former. I continuously strive to become the best version of myself by learning new skills and I want you to do the same.
3. Massive action: Taking action, despite feeling fearful is the best fear killer I have come across. The consistency of taking small steps is important.
I encourage you to move into the driver’s seat of life. Waiting for what will happen to you is detrimental for you mental and emotional health.
