Hyper creative producer / engineer Mike Bennett recorded a really interesting interview (coming soon) but this short section covering his approach to creating unique sounding records caught our interest and we thought it deserved being put up on its own - we hope you enjoy!
Mike Bennett started in the industry working as a writer and producer for Toyah, he wrote and produced the album Dreamchild (Universal), Now and Then (SPV) and Out of the Blue (SPV). He went on to co-write and produce Hazel O'Connor.
Throughout the 80's and 90's Mike produced a range of artists including Bad Manners, Sham 69, Hazel Dean, Jona Lewie, Judie Tzuke, Diane Charlemagne, Glen Matlock, Doctor and the Medics, Angie Brown, Bananarama and The Stranglers, for whom he remixed Golden Brown, All of the Day and All of the Night and European Female.
Whilst working as an in house producer for Trojan Records, Bennett produced and remixed several artists including The Specials, The Selecter, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, The Pioneers, The Melodians, Desmond Dekker, Dave and Ansel Collins and Lee “Scratch” Perry, for whom he collaborated with on with the dubplate of Bionic Rats which first featured on the critically acclaimed Trojan Jungle series.
Bennett also co-wrote and produced with the late great music Svengali and Leftfield producer Kim Fowley. These intense sessions culminated in the albums Let the Madness In (Receiver Records) and the double album The Trip of a Lifetime which featured the likes of Teenage Fanclub, Roni Size, William Orbit and other luminaries from the music fraternity. Bennett and Fowley continued to work together, co-producing projects for Alan McGee’s Creation Records, including albums such as Theme Park by BMX Bandits.
His work with The Fall started with the Permanent/BMG album Cerebral Caustic which was followed up by the hit single The Chiselers/Chilinist, for which he was a co-writer. Mike went on to produce several more albums with The Fall including Northern Attitude (MCI) and The Light User Syndrome (Jet Records).
Bennett went on to produce several albums for the classic rock band Wishbone Ash, including Timeline (Universal), Live in Japan (Action Replay) as well as co-writing and producing Trance Visionary (BMG) and Psychic Terrorism (Universal).
For secret records, he remixed and produced a number of albums including Sweet's Solid Gold Action, which featured industrial mixes of tracks such as Fox on the Run, Action, Lost Angels and Sweet FA, many of which have featured on soundtracks and high profile compilations.
With keyboard legend Keith Emerson, Mike Bennett produced and co-wrote the three album box set Reworks for Emerson, Lake and Palmer, which was premiered at the Royal Festival Hall, opening with their reworking of Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man.
Bennett's subsequent work includes indie and electronic bands such as the EDM Mother Funkers, Alberteen, Flexy Boys, Roger Grech and the legendary Ian Brown for who we co-wrote the hit single Golden Gaze.
