Spacecraft like satellites go through extreme conditions when they launch into orbit - and once they're up, maintaining them is extremely difficult. So how do we make sure all their components can survive the journey, and how can we test them here on Earth?
Meet Paul Cesar, the infrastructure manager for the STFC RAL Space Building R100. RAL Space designs, tests and assembles components like sensors, cameras and communications devices to go on spacecraft. They have some incredible equipment - like vast vacuum chambers that can simulate the extreme conditions of space. And all this needs to be kept absolutely clean. Paul and his team ensure that the environmental conditions of the test rooms are perfect for accurate and reliable testing - from humidity to the highest standard of cleanliness.
Paul says: "It's not quite rocket science, but getting satellites and equipment on those satellites into space is very appealing to me."
