Joseph Lekula, a herder in Kenya’s Laikipia valley, spoke to Nazanine Moshiri about the violence erupting there due to the dramatic consequences of an ongoing drought.
Up to 75% of livestock have died over the past two years due to the lack of water and adequate pasture. Armed clashes between pastoralists and farmers as well as between security forces and herders have led to at least 95 deaths since September last year.
The link between climate change and conflict cannot be overlooked any longer. By exacerbating social, economic and political tensions, climate change contributes to deadly violence.
Ahead of the #COP27, global leaders must include climate security in the climate change conversation.
