Chanthaburi is a wealthy, vibrant, fast-growing city in southeastern Thailand, 195 kilometers from Bangkok.
Chanthaburi is a center for jewelry processing and gemstone trading.
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is Thailand's largest Roman Catholic church and one of the city's most notable landmarks.
The tall dark Gothic building with white trim looks very impressive - strict, noble, but elegant and even a little toy in its own way.
The first church building appeared on the site now occupied by the cathedral in 1711. Since that time, it has undergone at least four renovations.
The modern cathedral appeared in 1909 and expanded over time due to the influx of Vietnamese Christians. In front of the cathedral is a statue of the Virgin Mary, which the locals constantly decorate with flowers. The cathedral is active, but is open to the public only during services.
