(31 Jan 2014) Ministers, diplomats and defence officials gathered in Munich on Friday for a security conference - renowned as a venue for backroom diplomacy and negotiations - with several international crises in the spotlight.
Ukrainian opposition leaders were among those at the conference, which Ukraine's foreign minister also is to attend.
Parts of Ukraine have been wracked with protests that began after President Viktor Yanukovych backed out of an agreement to deepen ties with the European Union in November, but quickly came to encompass discontent over various issues.
Negotiations between the authorities and the opposition on finding a way out of the crisis appeared to have stalled on Thursday, after Yanukovych took an unexpected sick leave and told opposition leaders that it was now up to them to make concessions.
Opposition leader Arseniy Yatsenyuk wished Yanukovych good health, saying that when leaders took sick leave during Soviet times, "always something happened and usually it was bad".
He said the opposition wanted support from Western nations "in order to stabilise the political and economical situation in the country".
This week Yanukovych accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and the parliament, which he controls, and rescinded harsh anti-protest legislation that sparked last week's violence.
