How can you tell right away whether your patient's skin infection is something you can easily treat with oral antibiotics or something more complicated and even life-threatening?
Something that will require diagnostic tests, broad-spectrum antibiotics, or maybe even surgery (sepsis, abscesses, areas of necrosis, necrotizing infections, bacterial arthritis, prosthetic joint infections, diabetic foot infections, osteomyelitis, etc.)?
In any patient with a skin infection (cellulitis, erysipelas, etc.), we should always look for signs of systemic spread, abscesses, deep tissue infections, necrotizing infections, and other factors that make treatment more difficult. The danger signs and red flags covered in this lecture are absolutely essential! The red flags covered in this video will help you recognize severe and potentially life-threatening skin and soft tissue infections as early as possible, even if they appear unimpressive at first.
