Many families notice differences in their infants or toddlers but wait to see if they outgrow these differences. This is a mistake that many parents make. If you have concerns about your child's development, the best thing to do is pursue your concerns, talk to your paediatrician or family doctor.
Some common red flags for autism are:
- lack of or limited eye contact
- speech delays
- repetitive or stereotypic behaviours
- loss of previously acquired skills
Getting a diagnosis of autism for your child can be frightening or distressful. However, having the formal diagnosis will allow you to access funding and other programs that your child wouldn't qualify for without the diagnosis.
Having said that, you do not need to have a diagnosis to being intervention.
