STORYLINE:
Colombian authorities announced on Friday they had arrested a man alleged to be one of the most wanted organised crime members in Italy.
Fifty-nine-year-old Domenico Trimboli was presented to the media during a news conference in Bogota.
General Jorge Nieto Rojas from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Interpol (DIJIN) claimed that Trimboli was considered "one of the 20 most wanted criminals in Italy."
Trimboli was arrested in Medellin on Thursday, about 250 kilometres (155 miles) northeast of the Colombian capital of Bogota.
Rojas alleged that Trimboli was part of a "mafia organisation" in the Calabria region in Italy.
According to the Colombian authorities, Trimboli had contacts with Colombian and Spanish drug dealers in Europe.
They claimed he was travelling with fake identification when he was caught.
An Interpol arrest warrant was apparently in force for Trimboli and he was also said to be awaiting a 12-year prison sentence in Italy.
Colombian authorities said he would be extradited to Italy shortly.
