The World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday said the delay in the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine trial was a "wake-up call".
The pharmaceutical company's decision to delay the Phase 3 trial of its COVID-19 vaccine due to safety reasons was a reminder that vaccine development is "not always a fast and a straight road", said WHO Chief Scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan.
Swaminathan said there was no need to be "overly discouraged" by the news and added that "these things happen".
On Tuesday, AstraZeneca had said in a statement that a potentially unexplained illness in a recipient had triggered a “standard review process” and that late-stage studies were put temporarily on hold.
