Chinese researchers claim to have created a strong Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) using technology similar to that used in electric cars.
This new catapult can rapidly launch a 30-ton projectile from 0 to 230 feet/s (0 to 70 m/s) in about 2.1 seconds. A team of scientists and engineers in Beijing developed this system, which could reduce the cost of EMALS catapults on aircraft carriers.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), it can handle about double the weight of China's most advanced stealth aircraft, the J-20.
The new EMALS system was introduced on February 27 through a peer-reviewed paper in the Chinese academic journal Acta Armamentarii.
