CONSUMING SPIRITS Synopsis:
Victor Blue, Gentian Violet and Earl Gray all live in a forgotten corner somewhere deep in America. Victor and Miss Violet both work at "The Suggester," the local newspaper, sometimes perform together at the town bar and are kind of in a relationship, and kind of not. Earl, meanwhile, has a nightly radio show called 'Gardener's Corner' in which he shares his wisdom on plants and life more generally. Miss Violet listens in when she drives the bus, Victor when he goes on around in his stolen truck, and the rest of the town probably tunes in too.
It may not sound like a much of plot, but as these three characters' lives intersect, in the present and the past, a layered and highly atmospheric gothic tale unfolds. Consuming Spirits is not just a film, it is a masterful, one-of-a-kind animation for adults that has been lovingly crafted to perfection by Chris Sullivan over the course of nearly 15 years. Using an ever-changing combination of pencil drawings, paper cut-outs, photographs, newspaper clippings, shadow puppetry and stop-motion models, Consuming Spirits is simply gorgeous, one memorable scene following another and complemented by a score consisting largely of nostalgia-invoking Irish folk songs. If only every film were as creative and original, going to the cinema would be a constant thrill.
