Lactobacillus (Lactobacilli) are part of the microbiota (microbiome) of the vaginal canal. These bacteria are anaerobic, non-spore forming, Gram-Positive Rods (bacilli). Other bacteria in this category include actinomyces, mobiluncus (vaginal canal - with Gardenerella vaginalis - bacterial vaginosis- fishy smell vagina), and propionibacterium acnes (acne). Strict anaerobe vs facultative anaerobe. Normal flora of the oral cavity, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary. Lactobacilli can cause bacteremia and septicemia (especially in immunocompromised patients. Lactobacillus is commonly found in urine samples and blood cultures.
