We love to feature ordinary people who do extraordinary things. Hailing from Athlone and born in District Six, Armien "Arch" Sydow is a guerilla freedom fighter who joined the UDF during the 1980's. He worked for Safmarine from the tender age of 17 and led a group of men to protest for wages that was being withheld from them. This took place long before any workers’ unions existed. Armien describes this protest as being his very first taste of engaging in a revolution.
The Golden Years celebrates, acknowledges, appreciates and represents the lives of South Africa’s diverse colourful senior citizens in an entertaining, interesting and honest manner.
