The Dictator. After the annihilation of all the Roman armies at Trebbia and Lake Trasimene, Fabius "the Delayer" was elected as "Dictator" of Rome, who determined not to be drawn into battle but to wear down Hannibal.
Greatly outnumbered and without resupply from Carthage, Hannibal became trapped and surrounded in the mountains. However, he cunningly escaped at night by using a herd of oxen, the Carthaginians tying pitch-filled fagots to their horns and setting them on fire, driving the oxen wild and deceiving the Romans, whilst they quietly marched through a pass, to safety.
Passo Godi is a beautiful pass, 1630msl where the landscape constantly changes as the road winds upwards, from the bottom to the sheer drops of the balcony-like roads at the village Castrovalva, past Lago di Scanno (Abruzzo's largest natural basin), through the town of Scanno, renowned as one of the most beautiful places in Italy.
