They may look like all-American teenagers, they may embody the so-not-cool-they’re-cool spirit (or is it the other way around?) of Midwestern choristers, but in fact, the cast of Glee shot the public service announcement celebrating 2011’s Fashion’s Night Out far from the fictional halls of Lima, Ohio’s McKinley High School. The filming took place in a cavernous arena in Manchester, England, since the Glee gang has been just a little bit busy recently, embarking on an international tour, and in their spare time, shooting Glee: The 3D Concert Movie which opened in August.
Given their wild schedule, the cast had only one afternoon to don a thrilling array of labels and vamp for the video. Over a dazzling cover of David Bowie’s “Fashion,” Lea Michele rocks out in Balmain; Heather Morris, who plays Brittany, is resplendent in a Dolce & Gabbana coat. “We don’t get to dress up like this too often!” says Jenna Ushkowitz, who plays Tina, and who confesses that she had a ball at FNO in New York City last year.
Trey Laird, the video’s creative director, describes it as “fashion meets FNO meets Glee meets Bowie—a stylized fantasy fashion moment!” He thinks that the cast is an especially apt choice for this year’s spokespeople, because “they’re all different shapes and sizes and backgrounds.” In other words, even when they are draped in Ohne Titel and Marc Jacobs, singing their hearts out on the PSA, “people can relate to them—they’re fun and friendly, but you still have the glamour.”—Lynn Yaeger
