Michaela Community School Principal Katharine Birbalsingh says Australia is currently placed 70th out of 77 countries in “disciplinary climate” in school classrooms and is going down the “progressive route in quite a big way”.
“We just need to go back to basics,” she told Sky News Australia.
Ms Birbalsingh said what is needed in schools are teachers who are “on the ground, who can make a difference”.
She said these teachers need to examine the discipline and teaching methods in schools, particularly when it comes to adult authority.
“We’ve sort of lost that – not just in our schools, but in our families too.
“Where parents or teachers try and be friends with their kids, as opposed to – you want to seek admiration, you want to seek respect from the children.
“We need to be in charge as adults in authority leading the learning.”
