Aloha, my name is Donna Fisher. I am a veteran English teacher who has taught grades 6th-12th for almost two decades. For six years, I taught grades 7-12 daily (one period of each grade) using an Abeka (rigorous) curriculum in a private school, and I have taught grades 6, 7, and 8 in public school for over a decade. My students have not only been able to learn and understand these complex ELA concepts, but they have also been able to retain what they learned; and demonstrate their knowledge on the end-of-year state test. Now, I want to share them with you. I have been creating and using my raps since 2005 in both public and private schools with tremendous success. Okay, here is a story to help you remember;
Simple, compound, complex,
Compound-complex and what’s the difference.

Birdy, birdy in the tree,
I’m sitting here so quietly.
My life is simple as can be
Without dependents bothering me.
I simply eat and sleep in my home.
And, all my simple choices are my own.
I am one independent bird, simply living alone.

When what to my wondering eyes do I see?
But a really cute bird looking at me.
I will make her my wife and together
We will live a compound life.
Two independent birds living, without a fuss,
Without dependent chicks bothering us.

One year later things are very complex.
I have dependent chicks and my wife has left the nest.
She went to visit her sister and said to do my best.
As one independent with one or more dependent chicks,
All I do is work, work, work; things are so complex.

One week later my wife has come back to the nest.
Now that there’s compound help, life has less stress.
Two independents with dependent chicks,
Our life is compound and complex.
Compound because there are two or more independents.
Complex because we have one or more dependent chicks.
