Language is closely related to identity, yet more than 30% of Grade 1 pupils are still not taught in their home language. 75% of schools in South Africa have implemented a policy of mother-tongue teaching in the foundation phase in the first three years of school. The idea is to help the children become literate in their mother tongue, and learn basic literacy skills in their home languages.
