People Who Finally Stood Up to Toxic Family Traditions… What Happened?
Ever feel like your parents always pick someone else over you? Mine always choose my brother. I grew up knowing it. I kept the peace to avoid feeling awful. I was the dependable one, always showing up, doing the right thing.
Then my brother marries into a nightmare family—entitled, snobby, and mean. They host Thanksgiving every year, and we always go to keep my parents happy. But the last two years, my sister-in-law’s dad was incredibly mean to my 5-year-old. After the second time, I told them if it continued, we wouldn’t come anymore. Things were fine after that, but only because we stayed away from their house—where the dad feels comfortable being nasty.
You thought I’d let this slide again? Not this time.
We planned a local trip for our family this Thanksgiving and invited everyone. They liked the idea—until my brother declined, and suddenly, my parents said, “We can’t pick between families” and chose his. I wasn’t even mad—I expected it.
So we booked the trip anyway. Then today, I get a group text about Thanksgiving plans. I replied, “We’ll be out of town!” Now they’re upset and acting blindsided, saying they thought we weren’t going since they declined the trip. But guess what? We’re going.
So… AITAH?
