The Philippine military released footage of a face-off between its navy and a Chinese coast guard on June 19, 2024. Manila says a Filipino sailor sustained “serious injury” in the June 17 altercation, which was said to have involved weapons. Beijing says its coast guard was conducting a “boarding inspection” of the Philippine vessels, under Chinese laws implemented days earlier when its forces were given sweeping new powers.
