Note that this service covers furthest distance between any 2 railway stations in the UK between Lockerbie and Kirknewton a distance of around 65 miles. Although Ardwick and Carnforth are listed above they both do not have platforms on the lines this service uses with Ardwick being on the Guide Bridge route and Carnforth being on the Cumbrian Coast and Bentham lines. At around 2:49:05 this service passes close to Carstairs however the station in only accessible by Glasgow WCML or Edinburgh to Glasgow services.
Services on this route usually operate every 2 hours with the other hour being a Manchester Airport to Glasgow Central service providing an hourly service on the Manchester to Lockerbie section of this route operated by TransPennine Express. The calling pattern on this specific service was quite unusual as it was one of the few services to operate non stop Preston to Carlisle but most TPE services on this route call at Lancaster and either Oxenholme Lake District or Penrith North Lakes, sometimes both.
Avanti West Coast also provide a 2 hourly service between Preston and Edinburgh as part of the London Euston to Edinburgh via West Midlands service. Other Avanti services operate between Preston and Carlisle going to Glasgow Central at least once an hour. There is a limited Liverpool Lime Street to Glasgow Central service via St Helens Central. Norther provide services between Manchester and Lancaster going to Barrow and Windermere which operate via Wigan North Western and also a half hourly Manchester to Preston via Bolton service to Blackpool North of which 1 serves the Airport. ScotRail operate stopping services via Shotts between Edinburgh and Kirknewton. Many other operators operate between Haymarket and Waverley including ScotRail, Avanti West Coast, LNER, Caledonian Sleeper and Cross Country.
There is interchange with 2 different tramways on this service at Manchester Airport and Piccadilly for the Manchester Metrolink and at Haymarket for Edinburgh Trams. At Piccadilly there are also connections available to 5 other operators including Avanti West Coast, Cross Country, Northern, East Midlands Railway and Transport for Wales.
The rolling stock on this route is now almost always 5 carriage CAF class 397 known as the Nova 2, these trains operate the majority of WCML TransPennine Express services. There is a very limited West Coast TPE service operated by the class 802 Nova 1 trains. In the past class 350 Desiro and class 185 Desiro have operated this service. Avanti services from Preston northwards on this route are operated by 9 and 11 carriage class 390 Pendolino and 5 carriage class 221 Super Voyager.
This route is fully electrified throughout using overhead AC electrification. This route is mostly double track with 4 tracks provided for short sections such as between Haymarket and Edinburgh Waverley. Previously which the route via Bolton was not electrified this service operated via Eccles to and Wigan North Western but since Electrification services now usually operate via Bolton.
