Kolkata Rape & Murder: Doctors Stage Protests Across India; CM Mamata Banerjee Seeks CBI Probe

Junior doctors in India have called a nationwide strike in response to the rape and murder of a 32-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The protests are being staged in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and others. The trainee doctor's body was discovered on August 9 in a seminar hall, with the autopsy revealing she had been sexually assaulted before being strangled and smothered to death. Kolkata Police have arrested a civic volunteer linked to the case, who allegedly tried to destroy evidence. The ongoing strike has led to the resignation of RG Kar Medical College Principal Sandip Ghosh. Junior doctors are calling for a speedy investigation and have demanded that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) take over the case, a fast-track court, and improved safety measures. FORDA General Secretary Dr Sarvesh Pandey has stated that the strike will continue until these demands are met. Meanwhile, BJP leaders are questioning West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s silence on the matter.
