Greenhouses are a common topic, and there are some things that I really want people to know about buying one.
Let's start off checking out my greenhouse. This time of year, it's more used for storage and seed saving than anything. It's just too hot this time of year to use it to start seeds.
Here are some things I want you to know:
BIGGER IS NOT BETTER
This is a fairly small space, and we're able to start hundreds of seeds here each year. A bigger space means it's more to manage. That said, too small can also be a problem.
ELECTRICITY
Power is key to moving air, and you may also be running irrigation. Air flow is one of the most important things to plants' health in a greenhouse.
VENTILIATION
You generally want at least 15-20% of the space to be ventilated. This can be windows, roof vents, or even roll up sides. This is so important to keeping the temperature regulated. Especially during the summer months, it can get way too hot in there.
LEVEL SPACES
This is especially important if you're using the bottom watering method (which I recommend). Your shelves need to be level. If they aren't, some plants will end up soaked, and others will end up drying out.
For most people in zones 9 and 10, a greenhouse is optional. If used properly, it can be a great tool. Otherwise, don't feel the pressure to go out and buy one.
