When working in a team environment, it’s hard to overstate the importance of core values. As a leader, they should be the foundation upon which your team operates. With a clear set of values, everyone is aware of their goals and can work towards them together.
In fact, Roy Disney -- visionary creator of Disney World and Walt Disney’s brother -- once said, “When values are clear, decision making is easy.” He recognized the importance of core values as a powerful tool for change. Putting his principles into action, he was able to achieve the remarkably visionary construction of Disney World, a globally famous attraction that was built on teamwork.
As a leader, or as anyone working in a team environment, it is crucial to outline your core values for all members of the team. By drawing up a list of core values, and making them clearly visible to everyone, you can provide a focus for the team to work towards.
But don’t stop there. Talk about your team’s core values. Look for moments when an employee applied one of the core values and bring it up in a team meeting. The key to great teamwork is living your core values each day.
If one of your values is, “really listen and solve a customer’s problem,” then make sure that everyone on the team is going out and making an extra effort to really listen. Find ways that you can make a difference. When you’re working in a team environment, culture is like the glue that holds everyone together. With a clear list of core values, the team will set out on the same mission every day. That’s the importance of core values. And that’s why every team should have them.
