New superstar on the block RICKY MARTIN and old hand WILL SMITH both grabbed six nominations in the all important annual MTV Video Awards. All girl group TLC also picked up six nominations in the list, which was revealed yesterday in New York.
But they were all put in the shade by rock group KORN which picked up an amazing nine nominations for its video, FREAK ON A LEASH.
Comic CHRIS ROCK will host the all star ceremony at New York's Metropolitan Opera House on September 9.
Hundreds of fans turned out for the press announcement, principally to catch a glimpse of Ricky whose video for LIVIN' THE VIDA LOCA will compete for best video of the year.
His competition is Korn, LAURYN HILL (Doo Wop (That Thing)), Smith for Wild Wild West and BACKSTREET BOYS (I Want it That Way).
Grammy darling Hill was nominated for five awards, along with rapper BUSTA RHYMES for his videos "What's It Gonna Be?!" and "Gimme Some More.".
Martin and Smith go head to head in the best video by a male artist category along with LENNY KRAVITZ and EMINEM. Hill, JENNIFER LOPEZ, MADONNA and BRITNEY SPEARS compete in the female category.
The winners are decided by secret ballot from a jury of selected MTV viewers, journalists and industry representatives.
