The answer is rather surprising and can be said about most visual media: It's actually the sound. As an editor you even learn the 80-20 rule. 80% of a movie is the sound, and only 20% the picture.
This is an ongoing battle for sound engineers. It's honestly kind of cursed, because when the sound is bad everyone will notice. But exceptional sound rarely gets the recognition it deserves.
Anyway, try the experiment! Watch one trailer without the image, only the sound, and one without the sound but with the image. You'll see which one left a lasting impression!
