The counting of votes for seven assembly seats in six states have been completed. These bypolls are seen as a significant test for the opposition alliance INDIA against the ruling BJP-led NDA, with implications for upcoming state elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
In a big boost for INDIA ahead of the general election next year, members of the Opposition bloc scored four wins in bypolls to seven seats across six states on Friday. The BJP had victories on three seats.
The day began with the BJP securing wins in Tripura's Boxanagar and Dhanpur seats as candidates Tafajjal Hossain and Bindu Debnath won by huge margins of 30,237 and 18,871 votes respectively.
In Kerala, Congress's Chandy Oommen retained the Puthuppally seat that his father and former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had held for over 50 years. The 37-year-old Congress leader defeated the ruling CPI(M)'s candidate, Jaick C Thomas, by over 36,000 votes, bettering his father's victory margin. Bypolls to the seat were held after Oommen Chandy's death in July. The Congress and the CPI(M) are allies in the INDIA bloc.
The BJP retained Uttarakhand's Bageshwar seat as candidate Parwati Dass defeated Congress's Basant Kumar by over 2,400 votes.
