For the first time, the Ukrainian military employed an air defense system produced through collaboration with the USA in actual combat. The FrankenSAM project featured three anti-aircraft missile systems: the first, a blend of the Buk launcher and RIM-7 missiles; the second, a combination of a Soviet-made radar station and AIM-9 missiles; and the third, the most potent, incorporating elements of the Patriot air defense systems. This demonstrates that Ukraine not only chose to establish its own air defense system but also accomplished it effectively. They adeptly utilized Soviet components with Western missiles and vice versa, showcasing their capability not just in utilizing Western weaponry but also in creating indigenous arms – a noteworthy achievement during the war.
