Medical neglect and shame for women is so normal in religion that I’ve heard this far beyond my fundamentalist years. Just yesterday a former Catholic, now mainstream earth lover, wondered if a pelvic exam took a woman’s virginity.

Some food for thought:

🔴 Women die from treatable cancers because they won’t go to the doctor when they have symptoms.

🔴 Vulvas, vaginas, and reproductive organs can all require care outside of sexual activity.

🔴 Mothers can easily project their own uptight fears into their daughters. How the body is talked about and cared for matters when it comes to the transmission of shame.

We had some great discussion about this when I posted about well care and sex Ed. That’s saved in highlights, as are resources for sex-positive accounts. But ladies—-gynecological health is not only about sex. The fundies shame it because a healthy woman makes healthy choices. A healthy woman may listen to her doctor over her patristic husband. She may use birth control. There’s an agenda at work that has nothing to do with health or even faith, really.
